STAR TREK - 2009

STAR TREK
So then, with Batman, Fantastic Four, Superman, Doctor Who and The Incredible Hulk just a few of the franchises to receive reboots in recent years, it was perhaps inevitable that Star Trek would follow suit. Of course, Messrs Kirk, Spock, McCoy and co have only ever been played by the original cast on screen, so finding the right actors to take over was always going to decide whether 'Star Trek' was going to take off at warp speed or crash and burn faster than 'Daredevil'. Luckily, J.J. Abrams has created what may well be the most perfectly casted sci-fi feature film ever.
Chris Pine brings a refreshing and genuinely funny interpretation of Shatner's Kirk to the table, while Zach Quinto perfectly captures the inner struggles that Spock deals with as a half-vulcan half-human character. Despite all this, the real show-stealer comes in the form of Karl Urban as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy – an almost shockingly accurate read on the young medic that could barely have been played better by original Doc DeForest Kelly himself. In addition to the merits of the new cast comes a moving appearance from Leonard Nimoy that only adds to the heart of the film and is worked in well given its potential confusion.
Naturally a great cast can't make a film by itself, which is why it's all the more fantastic that 'Star Trek' is not just the best film in the history of the series, but one of the best action flicks of recent years. Filled to the brim with excellent special effects, exciting fight scenes and dozens of genuine laugh-out-loud moments, this is a movie that will finally unite hardcore fans and Trekkie-haters alike. For once, dare this ultra-cool and not remotely nerdy ever reviewer suggest it, it's not actually geeky to worship the Trek.
