Germany facing 'explosive' social unrest

In language that evoked images of the thirties Berlin and the last days of the Weimar republic, a number of Germany's top political leaders and trade unionists have predicted that their economy will shrink by up to 6 pc and that unemployment will rise to 4.7 million by 2010, a level not seen since the  1930s when the Nazis were propelled to power.

Michael Sommer, leader of the DGB trade union federation, called the latest wave of sackings a "declaration of war" against Germany's workers. "Social unrest can no longer be ruled out," he said.
